Writer Elina Ismail manages a quick chat with Brenda Song, who talks about acting, Asian-American stereotypes, and keeping her options open.
Brenda has been an actor since she was six years old, and she knew from the moment she started that it was what she wanted to do for a living. "I love entertaining people and stepping into different characters and doing fun things," she says. Her favorite part of working in entertainment is meeting people and learning about their experiences. Traveling is her least favorite part. "Sometimes the hardest thing is to juggle work life and personal life."
Growing up, she rarely saw any Asian-American actors on TV. If there was one, it would be a Jackie Chan, kung fu type. "[But] now you see people who are doing their own thing whether it be Lucy Liu or Zhang Ziyi." She also loves Angelia Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Matt Damon, and Russell Crowe, because of their talent to excel at every genre of acting.
Although she laughs that her personal theme song is "It's a Hard-Knock Life," and describes herself as "crazy," she's doing exactly what she's always wanted to do, and wouldn't change a thing.
